Before taking surf lessons in Caparica it is important to understand that the more than 20 km of coastline in the county can be divided into three distinct areas: the North São João Beach, the central coast is Caparica, and the South is Fonte da Telha. Each has its own well-known beaches and breaks that offer unique experiences for surfers of all abilities. The North beaches stretches from Inatel up to Cova do Vapor. The majority of the beaches are west or northwest facing and spots benefit from off-shore east winds, river mouths allow for incredible breaks.
These beaches are especially popular when a west or northwest swell comes in and combines with an offshore east wind. The central zone Caparica , stretching from North Beach to Nova Beach offers the most diversity in its breaks. For example, you may want to head out to the spots near the jetties where fast walls benefit those with short boards and better agility. Long waves at Paraiso Beach provide a slower ride for longboarders while the Marcelino Beach have numerous right and left breaks that make good surf possible during swells of different directions, tidal conditions, and sizes.

This is especially true in Fonte da Telha the big south west and west swells waves during the winter months generate waves over 2 meters in Caparica, at these days Fonte da Tenha is an option to have good but smaller size waves.
